It’s quite unfortunate for those on modest incomes that the cost of the license fee is increasing by £5 on April 1st. For the residents of St Crispin Retirement Village, this is no laughing matter.

One of them, 83-year-old Stan Fritton, has been in a dispute since November over the BBC license fees. Previously, they paid £7.50 each under an accommodation for residential care (ARC) license. However, after converting a storage room for visitors, they were informed they had violated the TV Licensing Act.

Letters demanding full payment started arriving for nearly 100 residents, causing distress among the elderly. Mr. Fritton expressed concern that even those with dementia were being targeted for payments.

Despite efforts to resolve the issue, TV Licensing has been unresponsive to their situation, frustrating the residents unnecessarily.

Regarding the license fee increase to £174.50, this issue goes beyond just one retirement village. According to the current BBC charter, prices will continue to rise based on inflation for the next two years.
