The UK is set to rejoin the European Union’s Erasmus student exchange scheme, as reported by various sources. This move comes after the popular program, which allowed British students to study at European universities without additional fees, was discontinued for UK students following Brexit on January 1, 2021.

According to The Times and The Guardian, ministers are expected to announce the UK’s reentry into the Erasmus program starting in January 2027. This decision follows promises made by Sir Keir Starmer for a post-Brexit reset deal with Brussels, with negotiations focusing on mutually agreed financial terms between the UK and the EU.

The UK had been advocating for a discount on membership fees, which are typically based on a country’s GDP. The EU has reportedly offered the UK a 30% reduction in fees for the first year of membership.

In addition to university study exchanges, British students will now have the opportunity to participate in vocational training placements under the Erasmus scheme. Recent talks between Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds and Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission’s trade lead, have been held in Brussels. However, the Cabinet Office has declined to comment on the ongoing discussions.

The UK’s universities have expressed their approval of this development. Tim Bradshaw, CEO of the Russell Group of leading universities, highlighted the benefits of the UK’s association with Erasmus+, emphasizing the new opportunities it will offer for students, adult learners, and young people. The program is also expected to enhance the contributions of EU students and staff to university life in the UK.

The Liberal Democrats, who have been advocating for the UK’s return to the Erasmus program, have welcomed this news. Leader Sir Ed Davey sees this as a positive step towards rectifying the challenges posed by the Conservative Brexit deal.
