Runcorn by-election

The political landscape in Runcorn and Helsby, situated on the banks of the Mersey, is more complex than initially perceived as a Labour stronghold. While there are industrial and manufacturing areas that have faced challenges due to changing shopping trends, there are also middle-class developments and rural areas with a leaning towards the Tories.

In this region, like many across the country, there is a sense of disillusionment among the electorate, with a lack of confidence in the effectiveness of politics. Marie Moss, director of the Space Cafe in Runcorn Old Town, reflects on a time when the community spirit was stronger, a sentiment that Reform UK is capitalizing on to attract traditional Labour voters. The party, led by Nigel Farage, emphasizes issues like migration, law and order, and the performance of the Labour government.

Taxi driver Mike Holland, a long-time Labour voter, notes concerns among locals about benefit changes and disability allowances. While some may consider switching to Reform UK, Mike is exploring other options like the Liberal Democrats and Greens, who have local candidates. The political contradictions within Reform UK become apparent in places like Runcorn town, where some residents who were taught never to vote Tory now find the party appealing.

As the by-election campaign shifts to rural areas like Frodsham and Helsby, traditionally leaning towards the Tories, Reform UK softens its message to reassure residents wary of drastic political changes. Labour, on the other hand, mobilizes against Farage by presenting their candidate as the only one who can halt Reform’s progress.

The campaign resonates with voters like makeup artist Nadine Tan in Frodsham, who emphasizes the need for unity and expresses disillusionment with political leaflets that all seem to say the same thing. Despite the controversial circumstances surrounding the former Labour MP in the area, opinions about his local efforts remain mixed.

As the election approaches, the constituency remains eager for change but uncertain about the best path forward. The full list of candidates for the Runcorn and Helsby by-election includes representatives from various parties, offering voters a range of choices to consider.
