Sir Ed Davey will urge US experts escaping an «anti-science agenda» to come to the UK, and commit to prioritizing the cure for cancer.
The leader of the Liberal Democrats will make this call in his keynote address at the party’s annual conference in Bournemouth today, proposing a special fellowship program to attract American scientists.
In his closing remarks at the conference, he will shift his focus to Donald Trump, after previously criticizing Elon Musk and Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.
Sir Ed is set to caution that the «biggest threat to the fight against cancer» is happening in the United States.
«The US is the largest global funder of cancer research, mainly through its National Cancer Institute,» he will state.
«However, since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, he has terminated numerous grants for cancer research projects.
«He is cutting billions of dollars from the National Cancer Institute’s budget.»
Sir Ed will encourage scientists affected by project cancellations or budget cuts to «come to the UK and complete their work here».
He believes a dedicated program should be established to facilitate their move to British research institutions without hefty visa fees.
Sir Ed is the only English party leader to openly criticize Mr. Trump and declined an invitation to the state banquet with the King at Windsor Castle during the US president’s state visit last week.

Sir Ed will also pledge in his speech to enhance healthcare and cancer research more broadly.
