The Prince of Wales celebrated the "amazing legacy" of Dame Deborah James after a fund set up shortly before her death raised over £20m. Prince William posted on his Instagram to say the achievement by the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK was "an incredible milestone and an amazing legacy". He added: "Deborah is in our thoughts today, as are all those who loved her. W."

The journalist and campaigner’s frank accounts of life with bowel cancer shed light on the condition and led to a deluge of donations.

Before her death in June 2022 at the age of 40, Dame Deborah was a host on the podcast You, Me And The Big C, which talked about living and dealing with cancer. Fans of the star had initially raised £1.6m within a 24-hour period after revealing her terminal diagnosis. The fund, which was launched in May 2022, had an initial target of £250,000.

In a video on their Instagram, Dame Deborah’s parents said: "The money raised so far is supporting some amazing Cancer Research projects and life-saving awareness activities. We’re so grateful to everyone who has supported the fund since its launch and is helping to continue Deborah’s legacy."
