Rachael Louise Moore was killed in Liverpool on Christmas Eve

A Merseyside police officer has been charged over the death of a young woman he hit with his patrol car while responding to an emergency call on Christmas Eve three years ago.

PC Scott Thompson, 32, will appear next week to face the charge of causing death by careless driving.

Rachael Moore, 22, a carer, was struck by the police car on Sheil Road just after 8pm on 24 December 2022.

The officer was responding to an unrelated emergency call at the time of the collision.

Ms Moore, who was born in Derby and had been a university student in Liverpool, was walking home from her job as a carer when she was hit.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The charge comes after an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

That investigation followed a mandatory referral from Merseyside Police after the incident.

In a statement, the IOPC said it had consulted with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout its investigation to consider any potential criminal offences.

It added that this led to the authorisation of the charge against PC Thompson last month.

He is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday
