The UK is prepared to allocate more than £100m for a potential deployment of British troops to Ukraine if a peace deal is reached between Donald Trump and Russia, according to the defence secretary. John Healey stated that Vladimir Putin considers Britain to be his «number one enemy» due to its support for Ukraine. The plan involves readying military personnel to join a multinational force that would assist in securing Ukraine’s borders in the event of a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US president. He indicated that British troops could be mobilized promptly following such an agreement, with soldiers potentially being deployed on the ground. Some of the funding required for this mission has already been allocated. In addition, the defence secretary highlighted the formation of a «Multinational Force Ukraine» by the UK and France over the past six months, involving more than 30 nations. This force would aid in safeguarding Ukraine’s skies and seas and training its troops if Russia agrees to cease its full-scale war. Mr. Healey emphasized the UK’s substantial support for Ukraine, including a record £4.5bn in aid this year and taking over the co-chairing role from the United States in a coalition of nations providing weapons and funding to Kyiv. He warned of a heightened threat level in Europe, stating that the risk of broader conflict has not been as significant since the end of World War II. The defence secretary mentioned that the UK and its NATO allies are more united and stronger in response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and beyond its borders. Investigation launched into ‘repeated’ maternity failures at Leeds NHS trust | UK News After persistent advocacy from bereaved families in Leeds, a fully independent inquiry into local maternity services has been initiated. Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed shock at the «repeated maternity failures» faced by these families, exacerbated by the inadequate response from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Despite being one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals, the trust stands out for its high rates of perinatal mortality based on official data. In June, the Care Quality Commission downgraded maternity services at the trust to «inadequate,» citing serious risks to women and babies and a toxic «blame culture» that silenced staff from speaking up. The launch of the inquiry has been welcomed by grieving families. Fiona Winser-Ramm and Daniel Ramm, who lost their baby Aliona in 2020 due to medical neglect, shared their relief at finally receiving answers and validation from the investigation. Lauren Caulfield, whose baby Grace was stillborn in 2022, also highlighted the importance of the inquiry in uncovering failings in her care. The families emphasized the long overdue need for accountability and justice in light of their heartbreaking experiences. Investigation launched into maternity failings at Leeds NHS trust

A senior cabinet minister has told Sky News that Aston in Birmingham cannot be allowed to become a «no-go area» for Jews, in response to controversy over fans of an Israeli football club being barred from attending a match next month. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband expressed strong disagreement with the local MP’s petition to ban fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv from the Aston Villa game, stating that such discrimination cannot be tolerated in the country. The government is actively working to reverse the decision, but there is no guarantee of success. Sir Keir Starmer and politicians from all parties have condemned the ban, with assurances from the government that efforts are being made to ensure both sets of fans can attend. Miliband emphasized the importance of not excluding people based on their faith or nationality, reaffirming the commitment to diversity, tolerance, and the rejection of prejudice in the UK. He firmly rejected the notion of any area being off-limits to individuals based on their religion or nationality, stating that such discrimination goes against the values of the country. Let’s not interpret this petition as a reflection of our nation.» The senior Conservative MP criticized the ban as a «disgrace,» stating, «The message being conveyed to Jewish individuals in the country is that they are unwelcome here. This country has historically been a refuge for Jewish people, and suggesting that we cannot ensure the safety of Israeli Jewish fans attending a football match only reinforces the idea that Jews are not accepted here.» Birmingham ‘should not be off-limits for Jews’, says cabinet minister on Sky News

Prince William is reportedly planning to adopt a «ruthless approach» towards Prince Andrew once he ascends to the throne, as concerns over the ongoing scandal involving the royal family continue to mount. A US lawyer has warned that the controversy surrounding Andrew’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein is far from over, with more damaging stories expected to surface. The Sunday Times has suggested that William intends to exclude his uncle from all royal activities due to the potential risk to the family’s reputation posed by recent revelations. This development coincides with reports that Andrew allegedly attempted to enlist the Metropolitan Police to investigate his accuser, Virginia Giuffre, in a bid to discredit her claims of sexual assault back in 2011. Gloria Allred, who represents several of Epstein’s victims, has emphasized that Andrew will not escape scrutiny for his association with the convicted sex offender. Despite relinquishing his Duke of York title and other honors, Andrew remains under intense scrutiny, particularly following reports that he maintained contact with Epstein even after claiming to have cut ties with him. The fallout from Andrew’s connections to Epstein continues to unravel, with Giuffre’s upcoming memoirs poised to reveal further details about her alleged encounters with the prince. Despite settling a civil sexual assault case with Giuffre in 2022, Andrew’s links to the scandal persist, indicating that the controversy surrounding him is unlikely to dissipate anytime soon.
