Marks and Spencer’s retail boss has warned that crime is becoming «more brazen, more organized, and more aggressive» following a week marked by antisocial behavior. Retail director Thinus Keeve expressed his frustration with the government and London Mayor Sadiq Khan in a letter published on the supermarket’s website on Thursday.

Keeve emphasized the need for a serious crackdown on crime by the government and effective policing prioritized by the Mayor. He highlighted the powerlessness felt without these measures in place. In response to recent incidents of antisocial behavior in Clapham, South London, where four officers and a member of the public were assaulted, approximately 100 officers were deployed on Tuesday.

The disturbances were attributed to groups of teenagers and young adults engaging in «link-ups» through social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat before descending upon shops. Marks and Spencer was reportedly one of the targeted stores.

Keeve further commented, stating that the situation is escalating to become more brazen, organized, and aggressive. He called for a stronger, faster, and more consistent police response utilizing existing tools to address repeat offenders and crime hotspots. Keeve urged for support for the police and collaboration with retailers to effectively tackle crime by sharing data and actively targeting offenders.

Questioning the reported decline in crime rates, Keeve expressed skepticism, particularly in London, a sentiment shared by many working in the retail sector. M&S Chief Executive Stuart Machin reached out to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood following the weekend’s events.

London Mayor Sadiq condemned the incidents as «utterly unacceptable,» vowing that the perpetrators would face the full force of the law. The police are collaborating with social media companies to combat viral content promoting violence and theft. In a separate incident, authorities in Rochdale implemented a 48-hour dispersal order in response to antisocial behavior.
