Fara Williams – England’s record appearance maker – has raised concerns about the increasing cost of football and is calling for more investment in grassroots facilities.
The Football Foundation, the UK’s largest sports charity, plans to construct over 500 new or replacement 3G artificial pitches in the next five years to enable matches to be played in all weather conditions.
This initiative could help meet the demand for participation in the sport, especially among girls following the Lionesses’ consecutive Euros victories.
These are facilities that Williams could only dream of while growing up in Battersea in the 80s and 90s, before achieving success at World Cups, European Championships, and the Olympics.
Securing funding for these facilities is crucial to Williams, who has represented England in 177 matches, more than any other player.
«Football has become an expensive sport now,» Williams told Sky News at Burgess Park pitches in south London. «In the past, it was a sport for the working class. The difference now is that access to organized sessions often requires a significant financial investment.
