Cambridgeshire Police have initiated a murder inquiry following the tragic passing of a baby boy who suffered a head injury.

Atijus Elertaite, a three-month-old infant, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition on January 3.

Authorities were alerted to an incident at a residence on St John’s Chase in March shortly after 11am.

Tragically, Atijus succumbed to his injuries on January 8. Law enforcement disclosed that a preliminary post-mortem examination identified a head injury as the primary cause of death, pending further medical evaluations.

It was revealed that a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both residents of March, had been apprehended on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) prior to Atijus’s passing.

Subsequently, on Thursday, the duo was rearrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

Detective Inspector Verity McCann expressed, «We understand that the local community will be shocked and deeply saddened, and our sympathies are with those impacted by Atijus’ tragic demise.

«We are diligently working to ascertain the precise sequence of events and urge everyone to exercise caution and refrain from speculating on the case, especially on social media platforms, as this could impede our investigation.»

Individuals possessing any information that could aid law enforcement are urged to contact 101 and reference incident 124 of January 3, or reach out to Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
