Ofcom has initiated a formal investigation into X’s AI tool, Grok, due to its use in generating sexualized images of women and children.
The media regulator reached out to the social media platform last Monday, setting a strict deadline of the previous Friday for them to «clarify the actions taken to fulfill their responsibilities in safeguarding their UK users.»
The company met the deadline, and Ofcom has promptly conducted an «expedited evaluation of available evidence as a matter of urgency.» It has stated that the formal investigation will delve into whether X, which is owned by tech mogul Elon Musk, has «neglected to adhere to its legal obligations under the Online Safety Act.»
Government officials have expressed readiness to stand by Ofcom should it determine that X ought to be prohibited in the UK.
However, the Conservative Party has voiced opposition to a ban as the appropriate solution.
