Sir Elton John has expressed his immense pride in Watford FC as the club unveils a new kit commemorating 50 years since he assumed the role of chairman. The team will don blue shirts and silver shorts for the first time in their upcoming home match against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. Known as the Hornets, Watford has traditionally donned yellow home shirts since 1959.
The choice of blue for the new kit pays homage to the color worn by Watford during Sir Elton’s early days as a supporter. In a heartfelt launch video, the 78-year-old music icon shared his enduring passion for the club, dating back to his childhood when they played in blue amidst two old stands. The kit features design elements inspired by his Diamonds hits compilation, including his iconic E logo, lyrics from his hit song Your Song, and the original Happy Hornet badge from his tenure as chairman in 1976.
Accompanying the blue shirt are silver shorts with E taping on the sides and the WFC crest. Despite stepping down as chairman in 2002, Sir Elton retains the title of honorary life president at the club, credited with transforming its trajectory and securing its future during his tenure. Under his leadership, Watford ascended from the fourth division to a second-place finish in the top flight, competing in European football and reaching an FA Cup final.
Watford’s current manager is Paulo Pezzolano, with the team currently positioned 14th in the Championship standings, having won only one of their first five league matches. Sir Elton’s illustrious music career includes 10 UK number one albums and 10 UK number one singles, featuring hits like Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Candle In The Wind.
The new kit will be presented in a special edition gift box and will be available for purchase both in the club’s stores and online starting at 9am on Friday. Fans have the opportunity to pre-order the kit to show their support for the team.
