Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf has come to the defense of an MP accused of «racism» for her comments about the representation of black and Asian people in TV adverts. He described Sarah Pochin as a «close friend» and a «great MP», acknowledging that her comments were poorly phrased and that she had apologized. Yusuf emphasized the importance of discussing representation in television advertising and stated that it is a valid point that needs to be addressed. Despite facing criticism for her remarks, Ms. Pochin has issued an apology, clarifying that her comments were not intended to cause offense. However, Health Secretary Wes Streeting labeled her comments as a disgrace and called out Reform UK’s leader Nigel Farage for not reprimanding her. The Liberal Democrats have called for Ms. Pochin to lose the party whip, which would require her to sit as an independent MP in Parliament. In response to the backlash, Ms. Pochin has stated that she will be more mindful of her language in the future. The Liberal Democrats have criticized her apology as an attempt to avoid taking responsibility for her words. Despite the controversy, Nigel Farage has maintained that racism has no place in his party.
British Airways has suspended its funding of The Louis Theroux Podcast after an interview with Bob Vylan’s frontman caused controversy. In the episode, Pascal Robinson-Foster expressed no remorse for chanting «death, death to the IDF [Israel Defence Forces]» at Glastonbury, stating that he would do it again without hesitation. British Airways cited a breach of their sponsorship policy regarding politically sensitive or controversial topics as the reason for pausing their advertising on the podcast. The airline is investigating how this breach occurred. Following the backlash from Bob Vylan’s performance at Glastonbury, where the band was dropped from various events and had their US tour canceled due to revoked visas, the comments were condemned as «hateful tirade» by the US and «appalling hate speech» by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit also found that the broadcast of Bob Vylan’s set violated editorial standards related to harm and offense. Despite the controversy, Bob Vylan has faced pressure to reschedule their upcoming tour dates in Manchester and Leeds, with Jewish leaders and politicians calling for postponement of the shows. The band released a statement on Facebook addressing the rescheduling of the shows due to political pressure. Louis Theroux has not commented on British Airways pausing its sponsorship of his podcast. When asked about the uproar caused by the chant at Glastonbury, Vylan expressed surprise at the reaction, stating that it was not intended to provoke such a response.
