Residents in West Bromwich are facing evacuation as firefighters work to contain a massive blaze involving 20 tonnes of tyres. The West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) has confirmed that four factory units on Great Bridge Street are affected by the fire, although fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.
Initially, WMFS responded to a fire at a single-storey factory measuring around 100m by 100m after receiving a call around 10.40am on Sunday. Images from the scene show a large black plume of smoke emanating from the site, with firefighters using aerial ladder platforms to combat the flames. Fifteen fire engines were dispatched to the scene, including a high-volume pump that utilized water from a nearby canal to help extinguish the blaze.
As a precautionary measure, West Midlands Police have overseen the evacuation of several homes on Elwell Street. WMFS is collaborating with the police to ensure the safety of evacuated residents and businesses in the vicinity.
A structural engineer is on-site to assess structural issues and a partial collapse in one area caused by the fire. Gas and electricity engineers are also present to isolate affected supplies where feasible. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
WMFS has conducted initial fire investigations and plans to conduct further inquiries when it is safe to do so. Multi-agency briefings are ongoing, with WMFS anticipating a continued presence at the scene for an extended period.

WMFS announced around 10pm on Sunday that evacuated residents are expected to be able to return home shortly. However, individuals in the area are advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the significant amount of smoke present.
WMFS’s response to the fire has been bolstered by support from National Grid, Severn Trent, the Environmental Agency, and Sandwell Council.
