Posting about Channel crossings or counterfeit passports on social media could result in a prison sentence of up to five years under new government proposals.

Studies indicate that approximately 80% of migrants arriving in the UK by small boats utilize online platforms during their journey, including reaching out to individuals associated with smuggling networks.

Although aiding illegal immigration is already against the law, authorities anticipate that establishing a new offense will grant law enforcement additional authority and disrupt criminal operations.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is also preparing to implement a rapid process to address the backlog of asylum cases, ensuring decisions are reached within weeks.

This development coincides with official statistics revealing that over 25,000 individuals have arrived via small boats in 2025, marking a record high for this time of the year.

Ms. Cooper condemned smugglers for peddling false assurances online, stating, «These criminals have no qualms about endangering migrants by employing brazen methods on social media.»

«We are committed to stopping them wherever they operate,» she added.

The proposed new law prohibiting the online promotion of Channel crossings is expected to be incorporated into the Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill currently progressing through Parliament.

More migrants arrive in Dover

The National Crime Agency collaborates with major tech companies to delete such content, removing over 8,000 posts last year.

A smuggler from Preston, sentenced to 17 years, shared videos of migrants expressing gratitude for his assistance.

In a separate instance, Albanian smugglers advertised £12,000 «package deals» promising housing and employment upon arrival in the UK.

The Conservative Party has criticized the government’s actions as insufficient, advocating for immediate deportations as the sole solution to addressing small boat crossings.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp remarked, «Labour lacks a clear strategy to deter illegal entry, lacks effective enforcement, and lacks a plan to expedite removals. This is a reactive attempt to appear strong after months of inaction.»

Waves and kisses from asylum hotel window

Recent protests outside hotels suspected of accommodating asylum seekers persist in various UK towns and cities.

Multiple demonstrators were apprehended, and law enforcement dispersed brief altercations outside the Thistle City Barbican Hotel in north London yesterday.

The government is obligated by law to furnish housing and sustenance to destitute asylum seekers while their claims are under review, with many prohibited from employment.
