Conor Benn claimed revenge over Chris Eubank Jr in their highly anticipated rematch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Eubank Jr won the original fight by unanimous decision in April – but the roles were reversed this time as Benn dominated his opponent from start to finish in the 12 rounds.
Benn floored Eubank Jr twice in the final round before celebrating wildly after the final bell.
The fight was the next part of a family feud that’s lasted 35 years, with the two fighters’ fathers, Chris and Nigel, having a bitter rivalry back in the 90s. The result leaves the possibility of a third bout open, but after the fight, Benn immediately ruled out a trilogy.
«It’s been some journey and I feel like this is the end of the Benn-Eubank saga,» the winner told sports broadcaster DAZN. «It’s done and finished. It’s over. This ends here.»
Benn then said that «everyone was saying ‘I can’t box’, put that in your pipe and smoke it,» before praising his opponent and their dads. «This wouldn’t have been what it was without Chris and without our dads,» he added. «This is generational. This is history. Credit to Chris. That’s all I’ve got to say. Not bad for two silver spoon kids.»
Benn’s promoter Eddie Hearn mentioned that the win puts the 29-year-old in line for a world title shot. «People don’t understand,» he said. «Benn left Australia to pursue his boxing career. He gave up everything to live the dream. He’s a great example to people who might not see a way back. He’s an inspiration. He was done. He had no money. He won that appeal, came back boxed Chris Eubank Jr twice and won by a landslide tonight. Now we drop down to 147 and try to win a world title there.»
Eubank Jr also told DAZN «I’ve been through hell and back,» and said: «The kid fought hard and tough. He hits hard. He was bigger than me on the scales. We put on a show and Conor Benn was the best man tonight. It’s 1-1. I’ve got to go away and deal with some of the things I’ve been dealing with in the last couple of months and who knows?»
