Christian Horner has expressed his shock at being fired as F1 Red Bull’s team principal in an emotional farewell speech. The 51-year-old, who had been with Red Bull since 2005, was the longest-serving team principal in F1. The team announced Laurent Mekies as the new CEO on Wednesday.
During his farewell speech at Red Bull’s UK base in Milton Keynes, Horner was visibly emotional, breaking down in tears as he revealed that he was informed that he would no longer be involved with the business or the team. He stated, «I will still remain employed by the company, but, operationally, the baton will be handed over.» Horner described the news as a shock and expressed his gratitude to the team for their dedication over the past 20-and-a-half years.
Horner’s departure marks a significant moment in the racing world, following a challenging period for the Red Bull team. Two years ago, the team dominated the F1 championship before falling behind its competitors. Currently, Red Bull sits fourth in the constructors’ championship, with star driver Max Verstappen in third place in the drivers’ standings.
In addition to the professional challenges, Horner faced personal allegations of inappropriate behavior in February 2024, which were dismissed following an appeal last summer. Despite the turmoil, Red Bull did not provide a specific reason for Horner’s departure in their statement.
During his tenure, Red Bull Racing achieved impressive milestones, including 124 race wins, 107 pole positions, and 287 podium finishes. The team also secured eight Drivers’ World Championships and six Constructors’ Championships under Horner’s leadership.
Red Bull expressed their gratitude for Horner’s exceptional work over the past two decades, highlighting his tireless commitment, experience, expertise, and innovative thinking in establishing Red Bull Racing as a successful and attractive team in Formula 1. They acknowledged his significant contribution and confirmed that Horner will forever remain an integral part of the team’s history.
